Waterproof Mattress Pad

How do I clean one of those pack and play mattresses with the cardboard type stuff on the inside?

I made a mistake and have been putting our baby in her pack and play without some kind of waterproof pad on the mattress, and now baby spit has soaked through the entire thing, including the board, and stained it. Has this happened to anyone else, and how do I clean it? Or should I just get a replacement mattress and be more careful this time? I just want to be able to use it with subsequent babies and I'm worried that the board will get all moldy or something (not sure if this would happen or not).

I would try to get a replacement if at all possible. Since it soaked into the inner material, the entire thing will be a breeding ground for bacteria. And I'm not sure how well you'd be able to clean it to make it safe for future babies.

Regular Serta/Simmons v. Totally Organic Crib Mattresses?

I am picking out a mattress for our crib. I understand that the mattress needs to be firm/fit the crib well, etc. and I found a Serta at Babies R Us does quite well.

However, I have been reading articles re fungus and the fire retardants mixing to promote toxic gas that could be a SIDS contributor. If this is true I do have the option of buying an organic mattress. They are quite expensive and if WORTH it I will spend it. However, I am not sure if this is just another way to blow money (there are so many). Now, I plan on using a waterproof mattress pad on top of a water proof mattress so perhaps the worry of fungus developing is not significant.

Anyhow, anyone who wants to weigh in on this, has considered buying organic and didn't or did buy organic just give me some reasons.

Well, have you died on your non organic mattress? Parents will look for anything to blame if their child passes away due to SIDS. The best prevention is not to use crib bumpers, keep baby in tightly fitting pajamas, no blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals, and to make sure the mattress is firm with a tightly fitted sheet. If you're still worried about SIDS, get an Angel Care monitor--there's a sensor pad that goes under the mattress and it's able to detect your child's breathing. If baby doesn't breathe for more than 20 seconds (it's common for people to stop breathing briefly in their sleep for five or ten seconds), an alarm will sound on your unit, so you can either go in and move baby to get him to start breathing again, or to begin CPR. Either way, you've caught it in time to get baby breathing again.
