What exactly are Egyptian cotton sheets?

And what makes them so soft? Is it just thread count? I got one set of amazingly soft sheets, but in trying to replace them I've bought very high thread count sheets that are thicker, and not so soft. What should I be looking for? Help me get a good sleep . . .

Egyptian cotton is a type of cotton grown in Egypt with very long silky threads. The length of the thread makes it very durable, and the silkiness makes it very soft.

It is more expensive than regular cotton. It will say it on the package.

What you could also try is Pima cotton which is nearly the exact same thing, and sometimes less expensive. The package will also say that the product is made of Pima cotton.

You should also make sure that the sheets you are buying are 100% cotton. A large quantity of sheets on the market are cotton/polyester, which lasts forever and doesn't wrinkle, but isn't very soft. Both cotton/poly and all-cotton sheets may have high thread counts.

You may also like sateen weave sheets, which have a smoother feel than regular weave sheets. The package will say sateen. It isn't necessary to get an extremely high thread count.

A set of 100% cotton, 400 thread count, Egyptian Cotton sateen sheets in queen size at my workplace (Sears) is currently on sale for $55.99. If you check the clearance racks you may find them for cheaper. I have the exact same set in a discontinued color that only cost me $15.
