Women’s Perfume Classification Made Easy

Fragrance classification makes it easier to create, identify and group different perfumes together by their scents, characters and perfume ingredients.
However, the process of classifying perfumes is not an exact science and some perfumes have been known to fit into many categories.
This can make working out what classification some perfumes belong to a bit difficult for the average person.
I’ve broken down the main categories and subcategories of women’s fragrances in the following paragraphs in an easy to understand way.

Aldehydic/Modern: These scents contain a type of aroma chemicals known as aldehydes. They have airy tone to them and get stronger as they are warmed by the skin. Perfumes in this category are usually geared towards women.
A famous example is Chanel No.5 by Chanel.

Amber/Orientals: This type of perfumes are rich and heavy, often containing pronounced notes of resins, spices, vanilla, exotic flowers, woods, musk and animal notes. This group a popular one for both men and ladies perfume.
A famous one is Shalimar by Guerlain.
Subcategories are - Sweet amber, Floral woody amber, Citrus amber, Floral spicy amber

Aquatic: Perfumes in this family are usually entirely made up of synthetic ozone notes. They can smell of the ocean, clean air and freshness with other influences like fruity or floral touches. A lot of unisex modern perfumes are made in this style.
Great examples are Eau D’issey Miyaki, Acqua De Gio and Egyptian Musk

Floral: Perfumes of this class are dominated by one or several types of flowers notes and are predominately feminine perfumes. A famous example is Diorissimo by Christian Dior.
Subcategories are - Single floral, Floral bouquet, Fruity flora, Single floral lavender, Aldehydic floral, Green floral, Woody floral and Woody fruity floral.

Floriental: The perfumes in this family contain deep floral notes, spices and rich bases like amber, musk and woods. A famous one is Tresor by Lancôme.

Fruity: Scents in this category are intensely fruity and have really fresh notes to them. They are most popular amongst teenage girls and young women. Examples are Lauren by Ralph Lauren and Island Kiss by Escada.

The world of perfume is a beautiful one that is ever growing and evolving. Yet still, it remains steeped in the history and tradition that keeps it together for generation after generation.
I deliberately decided to focus this article on perfumes for women alone and write a separate one dedicated to men’s perfume. This is because the topic is such an interesting and complex one that I felt it deserved its fair amount of attention.
