Guinea pigs chewing fleece... & odor????
I decided to try fleece as the bedding for my guinea pigs. I just started yesterday. First I put down an old quilted mattress pad (I cut off the elastic) and then I put down a fleece blanket and secured it. It look so soft and comfy...but my guinea pigs have already chewed holes in the fleece...plus it looks gross with all the droppings and is starting to smell. What can I do abt the smell and the chewing? I know they like to chew but I can't buy new fleece every day. Any suggestions???
Personally I like fleece and have used it for two years now without issue - it is excellent at wicking away moisture to whatever you use underneath. However, you do have to be particularly careful with cleaning - I would recommend spot cleaning daily of poops and washing the blankets every 3 or 4 days. Did you wash the fleece first? Often it takes a couple of washes (NO fabric softener) to get it wicking away pee. I prefer to have a layer of newspaper underneath as well.
Shavings have been known to contribute to skin and respiratory problems and I would not recommend using them, nor will many vets and rescues (in the UK, at least). If you're in North America, Carefresh is ideal, in the UK Megazorb is a good equivalent.
I have a section in my cage with megazorb (similar to carefresh) covered in hay with a hay rack that the pigs prefer to use as a litter area over the fleece. Put it in an area the pigs tend to pee in - they tend to favour one corner over another. Do you offer unlimited hay? I have never had problems with pigs chewing the fleece but then they have hay on-demand. I've often found chewing problems where the pigs have not had enough hay to keep them occupied.
