I love supercarriers, but couldn't they get cooler names?

Howdy, I'm not in the navy but I'm hugely impressed with US supercarriers, their size and power truely is awesome. The only downside is some (not all) of the names. I'm all for naming after significant US presidents (Lincoln, Washnington) but some I'm not so sure of (the Ronald Reagan? the George H W Bush?) and the new class is the gerald ford? What next? The Bill Clinton? The Richard Nixon? And now the UK is calling theirs the Queen Elizabeth and the Prince of Wales!

I think the older way of naming them is much cooler e.g. the vanguard submarines: Vanguard, Victorious, Vigilant and Vengeance or the Enterprise, or the HMS Invincible.

Does anyone know why they are named like this and can anyone think of better names?

This has pretty well been beaten to death, but... I'll throw my two cents in anyway!

They are 'supercarriers' in every sense of the word, we just don't normally call them that anymore because we don't have any small ones around to compare them to.

I was in an intell direct support unit so I got ot serve on a number of different ships - and each has it's own personality.

I served on the Forrestal (it's motto was "first in defence", but we called it the "first in disaster" due to the numerous fires it suffered during it's career, in fact during the short time I was on it in 1978 we had one that scared the crap out of me, it lasted about 11 hours, inside the ship).
I also sailed on the Saratoga (the "Sucking Sara", the crew called it), the Nimitz, the Eisenhower, and the Independence
(where we had a fire that melted a 60' hole in the flight deck).
I sailed on several Spruance class DD's and Perry class FF's
as well. The thing that I realized after reading your question
(never considered it before) was that every ship I served on was named after a person, except two.

I am in total agreement with you on the naming of these monsters. I for one would be unhappy to have to sail on a ship named the "bush", the "reagan" - or the "clinton".
None of these guys deserved a supercarrier named after them (Reagan was in charge at the end of the cold war, but that's all, there were 8 presidents and millions of military personell before him that fought the cold war for 45 years, before he ever came along. I think his contribution to the victory was real, but not decisive.

I think carriers should be named for famous battles in US history, names that carry some real weight and emotion.
Names like Saratoga, Lexington, Coral Sea, etc. Alternatives should be traditional navy ship names through our history
such as Enterprise, Independence, America and so on.
If I were to decide that a ship HAD to be named after a US president, there are VERY few that deserve it: Washington,
Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt, and that's about it.

Anyway, I appreciate your enthusiasm for our 'floating islands', and I hope you get a chance to visit one on a port call someday, they are truly awesome machines!

Who would win a fight between the Royal Navy and the Israeli Navy?

We all know how good Israel is at fighting the Arabs so i dont want to hear "oh they beat ed all the them Arab Armies up" in some distant war in which the Arabs were armed with sticks and stones.

If Israel came up against a modern Army roughly matching its size who would win?

So just imagine their is a naval battle e.g Prime minister Gordon Brown or the British Queen Elizabeth goes a bit mental and says he/she wants to blockade Israel and any ships heading towards their will be intercepted and be boarded by the Royal Navy.

So if Israeli navy has to break out the blockade can they succeed?

(Without their mummy the USA helping them out?)

I find this Q rather amusing. MUMMY? We didn't need the Yanks during the Falklands war, our last major naval engagement against a rather well equipped and well trained navy. We have just commissioned a new frigate that can take on 100 targets in any direction at any moment in time and there's 5 more of those are on the way. I don't even think Israel owns one frigate. Even our MUMMY - the USA doesn't own such frigates. So even though it aint going to happen, the RN can look after itself very well, thanks.
