What dimentions should a quilt be to fit a queen or king sized bed?
I plan on making a my very first quilt. I plan on using 6x6 squares and tying it with yarn. However I'm not sure how large I should make it. I'm still in college but want this to be something that I can keep for a long time. Since I'm not sure what size bed I will have in the future (king or queen) I'm not sure what size to make the quilt so that it will fit both beds well. I want it to have more than enough overhang so we can tuck it under the mattress easily. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
A standard queen-size mattress is 60"w x 80" l; kings come in 2 flavors - 'California' king 72" w x 84" l, and standard king 76" w x 80" l. To be sure your quilt will fit any of these bed sizes, make it to fit the largest dimension each way, which would be 76"w x 84" l. In addition to these numbers, you need to add a 'drop' (the distance the quilt hangs down on the sides) big enough to allow you to tuck the quilt under the mattress - modern mattresses can be as much as 14" thick, so you need to figure a 'drop' of at least 16" on each plus 16" at the foot, bringing us to a minimum of 108" w x 100" l. If you want the quilt to go over the pillows and tuck in (as opposed to the pillows sitting on top in shams, etc.), you'll need to add an additional 6" - 10" to the length, bringing us to a minimum size of 108"w - 106"l.
The problem is that a quilt this big will just puddle on the floor on a twin-size college bed, which is not likely to be satisfactory. You may want to consider making a twin-size quilt instead - it can still be used as a bed topper or a WONDERFUL couch quilt later. A good size to aim for on a twin quilt is somewhere around 6'w x 8' l (a standard twin mattress is 39"w x 75" l).
Whatever size you choose to make, there are a couple of things to remember. The first is that if you're using fabric squares cut to 6"x6", they will finish to 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" when you sew the standard 1/4" seam allowances, so 5 1/2" is the measurement you need to use in figuring the quilt's finished size. The second is that you'll need to choose a batting that allows quilting/tying as far apart as you wish to - for instance, some battings can be quilted or tied as far apart as every 10", but others need to be quilted/tied as closely as every 3"-4".
