Did the Window Treatments Recall Affect Your Blinds?

Once again the safety of window treatments has been called into question. With major retailers like Wal-Mart, JCPenny, and Pottery Barn participating in the recall, many Americans are inspecting their blinds to see if their blinds pose a safety hazard to their children. If you are among the millions of concerned parents, read on to find out if you have been affected by the recall.

Recall Affects Roman Shades
While roman shades are pretty, they can contain a hidden safety issue. On the back of some shades is an exposed cord. It lies flat against the shade but springs into action when the shades are lifted.

Some children have gotten their head caught in this tiny bit of exposed cord. You can pull on the cord (located on the backside) and see how the cord quickly expands big enough for a child's head.

Safety Tip - The best and safest window treatments are cordless. Anytime you install blinds in a nursery, child's room, or a children's play area choose cordless for their safety.

Returning the Roman Shades
If you find your Roman shades fit this description, then your blinds have been recalled. Some of the major retailers are expecting the blinds returned to the store. Others have a number to call. The best solution is call and find out how to return the blinds.

Retrofitting Roman Shades
If you do not want to return the shades or cannot return the shades, you can get a retrofit kit to make the shades safe. The Window Covering Safety Counsel is offering a free retrofit kit for all roman shades. You can find them on the web at windowcovering.org or by calling them at 1-800-506-4636.

Recall Affects Roll-Up Blinds
Roll-up blinds pose a different safety risk. They can harm children if the cord slips off the side. It is then that the child can get their head caught, which causes strangulation.

Check your blinds to see if the cord can come off the side. If it does, then the blinds pose a safety hazard and should be returned.

Returning and Retrofitting Roll-Up Blinds
The same procedures for returning and retrofitting blinds are followed for roll-up blinds as they are for Roman shades.

Safety Tip - Just like Roman shades, the Product Safety Commission and the Window Covering Safety Council recommend the use of cordless window treatments for all rooms with children. They are safer and do not pose a strangulation hazard.

Help! Discontinued Pottery Barn Quilt from 2007?

This is my dream quilt, from a pottery barn magazine 4 years ago. I've checked everywhere; ebay, craig's list, amazon, all over the internet. If anyone happens to know where on earth i could get this it would be much appreciated.

The quilt is called "Blockprint Patchwork Quilt and Sham" and is from the "early spring 2007" potter barn catalog. The description by pb says, "inspired by traditional handblocked prints from india, this colorful quilt features a mix of florals and paisleys" The quilt has light greens, pinks, lavenders, blue, and a small amount of yellow. Please help!!
