What is a euro sham for a pillow?

What is the difference between a regular pillow cover and a euro sham?

A euro sham, also called a continental sham or euro square, is a 26" square sham and is generally used for decorative purposes.

How much fabric should I buy?

I want to make a 26x26 euro sham and two 16x16 pillows. How many yards of fabric should I buy if the fabric is 1 yard long by 53.5 inches wide?

If you carefully lay this out before cutting the fabric you'll need:

1 - 27x27 square - Sham Front
2 - 15 x27 rectangles - Sham Back (split in middle to allow pillow insertion)

AND

4 - 17x17 squares - Pillow Fronts and Backs

**all measurements INCLUDE a 1/2" seam allowance on all edges**

In essence, yes, 1.5 yards of a SOLID color fabric "should" be sufficient, but if you are trying to use a patterned fabric I'd suggest 2 yards to match the fabric "repeat".

Just remember to cut all of your pieces "with the grain" of the fabric to prevent stretching.

** When hemming the "open" edges of the back use a 1/4" double-fold hem. Fold under 1/4" and press, fold under another 1/4" and press then top-stitch the hem 1/8" from the folded edge. This is a very strong hem and the extra 1" will allow the edges to overlap slightly to conceal the pillow insert. Complete these hems BEFORE sewing the back panels to the front of the sham.
