had just bought a new mattress for myself and saw they had an item called a mattress pad. I hadn't actually heard of them before, but after putting one on the mattress I was buying, I loved the extra softness it added to my mattress. They had mattress covers that slip over your mattress or mattress pads that lay on top of the mattress.

I fell in love with the memory foam mattress pad. It felt like I had went out and purchased a very spendy memory foam mattress, but this was considerably cheaper. The memory foam mattress's can be super expensive and this memory foam mattress pad, pretty much did the same thing, with about a third of the cost.

After sleeping on my new mattress for a few nights I decided to look around for mattress pads for my children's beds too. For them, I ended up getting covers that had what looked to be like a pillow top mattress, but it just slipped right over their mattress's, rather than it being a full mattress. Again, this was considerably cheaper than buying a new pillow top mattress. My kids truly love them.

For my sons mattress I chose the Naturlatex mattress mate topper. It slipped right over and fit perfectly. He jumped right on it and had this huge grin on his face saying "this is cool dad". Smiles all around from him, cool! With such an easy slip on, I knew this was going to be a score of a purchase. Easy to pull on and off, and not too big, that it wouldn't fit in our washer and dryer made this another great purchase. With his allergies too, this mattress cover even repelled allergens and bacteria, which is absolutely a bonus, for sure!

My daughter, who is older than my boy, had more of an opinion on what she wanted. She went with the feather bed cover mattress pad. She said it was like "sleeping on a cloud". I felt like I was in a commercial, hearing her talk like it was scripted and that made me look around for a hidden video camera. Of course she had to jump up and down on it and ask if we could put a glass of water on it while she jumped. I had to calm her down a bit, telling her that this is not the same type of mattress that she's seen in those infomercials. It was actually pretty funny to see how excited she was.

The whole purchase was made online, they had so many choices and styles to choose from, that I wanted to just reach through the screen and touch them all. I had heard way too much about the memory foam to not try that type for myself. And with having a duvet cover and goose down insert in the past, I knew that my daughter would love the feather goose down feel.

So overall, getting mattress pads was one of the best purchases I have made for the bedding in our household. And the ease of buying them online was awesome too! Have fun searching. I know I did.

Best type of foam mattress topper?

I am researching the differences in foam mattress pads. There are different thicknesses, different densities, open cell versus closed cell, etc. What is the best type of mattress to get where your body can just sink down in the mattress, allowing your spine to be in the neutral position, to ultimately provide the best sleep? My mattress I have now is rather firm and I am looking for support as well as more cushion.

Since everyone has different comfort preferences, there is no single answer . . it's just a trial and error process. Memory foam has a "sinking in - conforming" feel . . "like sleeping in warm mud". Latex has a more "supportive - push back" feel.
