why is egyptian cotton superior and what thread count is good tc vs type of cotton?
I think Egyptian cotton is supposed to be softer and more durable. A good thread count is anything above 500. Just make sure it says "single ply yarns" and not "double ply." With double ply yarns, it will say 500 thread count, but it's really only 250. Most sheets above 500 thread count will be double ply.
Pima cotton is also nice. I avoid percale and any cotton/poly blends. I usually buy pima or Egyptian cotton sateen sheets. Bed Bath & Beyond sells 500 TC Egyptian cotton sateen sheets by Wamsutta for about $200 per set. If money is no object and you really want to treat yourself, try Frette linens.
The only bad thing about buying nice sheets is you'll feel like you're sleeping on burlap when you're away from home. Sweet dreams!
