What is the Symbolism behind the coin in Batman: The Dark Knight?

I have chosen to write a relatively small essay (less than a page) about the symbolism of the coin in The Dark Knight, its purpose in the movie if you wish.
Please answer quickly if possible, I need to know!

Do your own research...but focus not on the coin but on Harvey Dent and Duality as a concept.

A the end of Batman: The Dark Knight did the Joker blow up the ships? Then what happened to him at the end?

Just need to know what happened at the end of batman: the dark knight because I was really confused by the ending.

Well, you know how they were at the top of the building fighting, and then you know when he said the line, "Now here we go" and nothing happened. Then he told Batman that "you have to do everything yourself", and that he needn't worry because he came prepared. And he took out the detonator. And then he said speaking of which do you know how I got these scars? And Batman said no but I know how you got these. And he shoots him with those sharp things, well he dropped the detonator when he was falling. So he never blew up the ships. And the swat team caught him right after Batman left. So he was put in jail. Or at least that is what you assume. They left at lot open at the end, I know.
